How To: Enable Blackberry Email on McCombs 2007 OWA

Business students at McCombs have finally found a solution to their blackberry woes of the last 10 months. RIM has recently updated their software to support Outlook OWA 2007 (which McCombs upgraded to this summer). So what does this mean for us? Well, we no longer have to jury-rig our own individual blackberry servers to get our email--the system now works exactly as it was designed to with the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS).

Here's how to enable the BIS email service on your AT&T blackberry (the field settings should be the same on any other carrier with the only difference being the access to the BIS service page).

1) First, head here to log into your AT&T account with your own username and password. (Here is the link for T-Mobile, and Verizon's link)

2) Once the BIS window is open, it should list your configured email accounts (if any). You'll need to click "Set Up Account"

3) Enter your email address and password, and then click next. This should start the system searching for your email settings, but it won't be able to find anything (this is good). From there you should click the box that says "I will provide the settings to add this email account"

4) Select "This is my work email account" and then "Next"

5) Choose the bottom radio button which says, "I can access my email account using a Web browser (OWA)"

6) Now is the last, and most important step. The settings for your mailbox must be input EXACTLY as described:

Outlook Web Access URL: http://mail.mccombs.utexas.edu/exchange
User Name: mccombs\msb___ (your MSB account)
Password: __________ (your MSB password)
Email address: _______________ (your BBA email address)
Mailbox name: ___________ (LEAVE THIS BLANK!)

It should look like this:

7) Click "Next" and your account should be successfully configured with the Blackberry Internet Service.

OPTIONAL:

8) To edit your footer or change your display name you must now click "Edit" on the main menu and save changes.

Besides removing the need for the redirector software, this fix now lets users view attachments--a nice upgrade from before. Please send me an email if I can answer any more questions about this process for you--thanks!
